How to Get a Marriage License in Hawaii: A Step-by-Step Guide

Before you stand at the altar to make your vows before God, you must meet the legal requirements of the State of Hawaii.

The process of securing a marriage license in Honolulu is straightforward, but it requires strict adherence to state timelines. Whether you live on Oʻahu or are traveling from the mainland for a destination wedding, you cannot legally marry without completing these specific administrative steps.

Here is exactly what you need to do to secure your Hawaii marriage license, ensuring the legal foundation of your wedding is handled without last-minute stress.

Apply Online with the Department of Health

Do not wait until you arrive on the island to begin the paperwork. You should start the process online from your home.

  • The Portal: Go to the official State of Hawaii Department of Health (DOH) marriage licensing website and fill out the online application.
  • The Fee: You will pay the state application fee ($60 plus a $5 administrative fee) directly through this secure portal.
  • The Locator Code: Once your payment is processed, the system will generate a Locator Code (also called an Authorization Code). Write this number down and save it in your phone. You must have this code for the next step.

Meet with a License Agent In Person

Filling out the online application does not mean you have a marriage license. You must appear together, in person, before a registered Hawaii marriage license agent to verify your identities.

  • The Timeline: You can only do this step within 30 days of your wedding date. If you pick up your license on June 1, it legally expires on July 1.
  • Finding an Agent: If you live on Oʻahu, or once you land in Honolulu, you must schedule an appointment with an agent. The Department of Health building in downtown Honolulu handles these appointments, but there are also independent agents authorized by the state who can meet with you.

Bring the Required Documents

When you meet with the license agent, the process is brief. To ensure there are no delays, both of you must bring the following:

  • Valid Photo ID: A current government-issued driver’s license, state ID, or passport.
  • The Locator Code: The number generated when you paid your fee online.
  • Previous Marriages: If either of you were previously married and the divorce was finalized, or the spouse passed away, less than 30 days prior to picking up your new license, you must provide a certified copy of the divorce decree or death certificate. If the previous marriage ended more than 30 days ago, you simply state the date and location on the application.

Understand the Validity and Waiting Periods

Hawaii operates with a few distinct advantages compared to other states regarding wedding logistics.

  • No Waiting Period: There is zero waiting period once the agent hands you the physical license. You can legally be married the very same day.
  • Geographical Limits: A Hawaii marriage license is only valid within the State of Hawaii. You cannot get a license in Honolulu and use it to marry on the mainland.
  • Medical Clearances: The State of Hawaii does not require any blood tests or medical clearances to issue a marriage license.

What Happens After the Ceremony

As your officiant, the legal responsibility shifts to me the moment the ceremony concludes.

  • Filing the Document: After I pronounce you husband and wife, we do not need to sign the document at the altar. I will take the license you received from the agent, verify the details, and officially file it with the State of Hawaii online.
  • Receiving Your Marriage Certificate: The State of Hawaii will automatically mail one official, certified copy of your marriage certificate to the forwarding address you provided on your application. However, it can take 4 to 6 weeks to arrive. If you need multiple certified copies to change your name on a driver’s license, passport, and bank accounts simultaneously, you can order and pay for additional copies directly through the DOH portal.+1

Navigating the logistics of a wedding requires organization, but the ceremony itself should be a moment of profound spiritual joy. A Christian wedding is a worship service—a gathering before God to affirm that marriage is His design and that your vows rest entirely on His faithfulness.
