Grief is a heavy reality. We don’t worship a God who is out of touch with sorrow; we worship a Savior who experienced loss and defeated death.
To help you find some footing, here are 20 scriptures about loss, mourning, and hope. They are broken down by the different seasons of grief so you can find exactly what you need right now.
1. When the Loss is Fresh
In the immediate aftermath of losing someone, the toll is heavy. These scriptures are a reminder that God doesn’t rush our grief—He sits with us in it.
1. Psalm 34:18
“The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”
Grief often takes a physical toll. This verse is a reminder that God draws closer to us when we are hurting, rather than pulling away.
2. Psalm 56:8
“You keep track of all my sorrows. You have collected all my tears in your bottle. You have recorded each one in your book.”
This verse reminds us that God sees your pain. Nothing you are feeling right now is ignored or forgotten.
3. Romans 8:26
“In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans.”
There will be days when you are simply too tired to pray. In those moments, the Holy Spirit steps in and prays on your behalf.
4. John 11:35
“Jesus wept.”
Jesus knew He was about to raise His friend Lazarus, but seeing the pain of the people He loved still brought Him to tears. He understands our sorrow.

Planning a funeral means finding words that honor a life while pointing to a larger truth. These passages offer clear declarations of hope for a service.
6. Psalm 23:4
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
Psalm 23 calls death a dark valley, but it also notes that the valley is just a passage we walk through with God. It isn’t the final stop.
7. John 11:25-26
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.’”
Because of Christ, physical death is not the end. This verse offers the promise of eternal life for those who believe.
8. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-14
“Brothers and sisters, we do not want you to be uninformed about those who sleep in death, so that you do not grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope.”

“‘Death has been swallowed up in victory.’ ‘Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?’”

3. What the Bible Says About Eternity
It is natural to wonder where our loved ones are. The Bible offers a clear picture of what comes next to give us peace of mind.
11. Revelation 21:3-4
“And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people… He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.’”
Heaven isn’t just a place where things are slightly better; it’s the end of sorrow. God promises to personally wipe away our tears and do away with pain.
12. John 14:1-3
“Do not let your hearts be troubled… In my Father’s house are many rooms… I am going there to prepare a place for you.”
Jesus described heaven as a prepared, welcoming home. Our loved ones in Christ are not wandering; they are safe and at home.
13. 2 Corinthians 5:1
“For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands.”
